|---|---|
| Version | NIAS; nine-item avoidant/restrictive eating-pattern screen |
| Respondent | Self-report |
| Purpose | Nine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Screen (NIAS) — administration and scoring reference. |
Administration
Use the selected validated NIAS form and examine the three eating-pattern dimensions separately.
Scoring method
Picky eating, appetite and fear subscales; clinical assessment needed.
Interpretation & limitations
- Interpret picky eating, low appetite and fear-related restriction in the context of nutrition, medical consequences and alternative explanations.
- Interpret the findings alongside the clinical interview, functioning, history and relevant physical assessment.
- A NIAS result does not establish ARFID or exclude weight/shape-related eating disorders. Population-specific thresholds need their own validation source.
- Use the original instrument and manual for item wording, rating anchors, missing-data rules and any normative conversions. This reference does not establish a diagnosis or select treatment.
